Script 08: Uphold the Law

Logline

One Christian and three  detectives are the top cops of the city until they make a fatal mistake which they try to cover up and end up threatening the Christian detective’s life.

Synopsis

Partners Jeremy, Kevin, Lloyd, and their families have their monthly Sunday barbeque in the park. Partner David and his wife Abigail show up from church late as usual. David and Jeremy talk in the car. Kevin and Lloyd jump into the car, scaring David. They walk up to a warehouse. Kevin and Lloyd go to the front. Jeremy and David go around back.

Kevin and Lloyd flash their badges and look around the warehouse. They find Julius Winn and chase him through the warehouse. Julius runs outside and around the back. Lloyd chases him outside where Jeremy joins the chase. Kevin jumps out of a warehouse window and tackles him. David handcuffs Julius. Jeremy drives David as they both voice reservations about each other.

D. A. and A. D. A. converse about if Julius will stand up in court. Kevin and Lloyd interrogate Julius while David and Jeremy watch. They threaten to put him in danger, which David takes exception to and interrupts. Kevin gives David (the Christian) a chance to use a different approach to no avail.

The police get a warrant to search Julius’ house where Jennifer reluctantly lets them in. They search the house and find a bag of drugs and money. Kevin and Lloyd show Julius the bag and threaten to arrest his wife. They tell Lieutenant that Julius would rather go to jail than anyone else getting into trouble including THE KING.

David watches a game on tv while his three partners watch the same game at a bar while talking about replacing him. David voices to his wife his fears about his partners.

Adam (the King) hangs out with his wife Eve and their son Abel. Lawyer interrupts their quiet time to express concerns about Julius who is in prison. Julius expresses to Inmate because of his props that he will not be in prison long as Lawyer promises to take care of him.

The church is half full as Jeremy and Vanessa have their infant son being Christened. Kevin and Lloyd argue over a bet they made that David and Abigail would be God parents. Inmate goes to attack Julius while he is asleep, but he wakes up in time to defend himself. They wrestle. Prison Guards break it up before real damage could be done. Kevin gets the call from prison. He and Lloyd leave the church during service and visit Julius in prison. David warns them that an attempted hit was set up by Prison Guard 1 without letting the prison know it.

Lieutenant tells A. D. A. and D. A. about Julius, and they set out to have him moved. When they go to move him, he has disappeared. David and Jeremy go inside the prison for Inmate. They bring him out but won’t let them take him to the point that the Guards threaten David and Jeremy. David turns the Guards on Prison Guard 1 who is on Adam’s payroll. David and Jeremy finally leave with Julius. A chopper approaches and shoots at the four police and Julius. They return fire. Shooter kills Julius but not before he gives his life to Jesus.

Shooter tells Adam Julius is dead, but the police are not. They show up at Adam’s house where there is a fire fight with his Security Guards. Eve takes Abel and luggage and goes through a trap door. The four arrest Adam. A day of interrogation in court between Adam and A. D. A. seems like a tie. The A. D. A. needs more evidence.

The four go back to Adam’s house and search. Eve comes out of a trap door into the arms of David and Jeremy. Kevin and Lloyd interrogate Eve. David turns the tide when he plays his phone. She says Abel is not Adam’s son which A. D. A. tells Adam. He jumps over the table at her. Lieutenant tells her there is a hit out on her, after seeing D. A. giving her a gun.

The four stand outside Vernon’s house who is supposed to have the hit on A. D. A. He takes a shower and dries his hair. The four break in and search the house. Kevin and Lloyd corner Vernon and Kevin shoots him. David and Jeremy run in. Vernon has a hair dryer. They search the house, nothing. The three decide to set up Vernon as David says no. Kevin threatens David who leaves.

Roberta finds her husband on the floor and calls 911. Jeremy, Kevin, and Lloyd go to Vernon’s house to help with the investigation while controlling the direction of the case. They find David’s phone and take it with them. Abigail cooks at the stove. David comes up behind her and grabs her mouth. He tells her what has happened and tells her to be careful. Jeremy talks to her and leaves. David and Abigail pray and he leaves. Jeremy sees David leave and tells Kevin.

Lieutenant talks with Kevin and Lloyd about Vernon and warns them to look after their own families which might be in danger. David anonymously warns A. D. A. that Vernon is not the guy. She tells Lieutenant, who goes to Kevin and Lloyd who are gone, and no one knows where they are.

Abigail leaves out of her back door with suitcases, gets into her car, and drives off as Jeremy watches. The car stops and Kevin opens the door. Jeremy gets in.  David goes to Julius’ house and Jennifer lets him in. They talk and he leaves. Shooter knocks on the door and forces his way in. A sound in the kitchen gets their attention. Shooter follows her into the kitchen with his gun drawn. There is a mouse. He laughs as David attacks him. They fight. She hits Shooter with a skillet until he stays down. David cuffs him with zip ties.

A. D. A. stands in an alley. David comes over to her and tells her about Vernon and Kevin. She is reluctant to do anything for the greater good. He warns her that he will if she won’t. Jeremy drives to a shed out of town and parks. Kevin opens the door where Abigail is tied up and shows a few bruises. Jeremy tells them everything about A. D. A.  Abigail runs her mouth while Kevin threatens her.

David goes to Vernon’s house and tells Roberta her husband is innocent and to watch out for the three detectives. David calls Kevin who informs him that he has Abigail. David is not shaken. David tells Lieutenant everything that is going on. She leaves to help David but is kidnapped by Kevin.

Informant walks down the street and David comes up behind him and points a gun at his head. Informant tells why he set up Vernon and is arrested and cuffed with zip ties. Kevin brings Lieutenant to the shed where neither woman is intimidated. David and Police surround the shed along with the three wives. Kevin, Jeremy, and Lloyd eventually give in.

D. A. sits at his desk with Lieutenant. “Where do we go from here?” David interrupts them to share his recording from Informant. D. A. talks with Lawyer and Adam who are looking to have their case overturned but it doesn’t work.

Vanessa visits Jeremy in prison while holding their son. She calls to mind all the times she warned him to follow David and leave Kevin and Lloyd alone. She insists to his dismay that David and Abigail will stay the God parents.

David and Abigail, both with battle scars, visit Roberta. David tells her the three detectives are in prison. Even though she knows he is a Christian, she is not ready to forgive him yet. Abigail tells her she was a victim once and he was there for her before they got married. She offers her support. They cry and hug.

Yolanda visits Kevin in prison and defends him. She even blames Jeremy and Lloyd and offers to hit Abigail. David offers to retire but Abigail won’t let him. Abigail tells him to forgive Kevin. Jeremy sits at the prison window. David comes in. They get a lot off of their chest. I guess they are friends again. David walks to the door and sees Kevin who looks at Jeremy and accuses him of being a snitch. David forgives Kevin who hits him. “How did we come to this?”
